MECHANISM− DECREASES

Chromium → Insulin resistance (HOMA-IR)

Higher Chromium decreases Insulin resistance (HOMA-IR).

Jamilian 2016 found that 200 micrograms of chromium picolinate a day for eight weeks moved HOMA-IR by -0.8 versus +0.9 on placebo in 64 women with polycystic ovary syndrome (P<0.001). Kim 2012 saw a similar direction in 25 overweight children. Jain 2013's picolinate arm did not.

Mechanism

Authors treat chromium as a trace metal that may help insulin act. They do not isolate one receptor. Jamilian and Asemi assigned 64 women with polycystic ovary syndrome to 200 micrograms of picolinate or placebo for eight weeks. HOMA-IR moved -0.8 versus +0.9 (P<0.001). Insulin and HOMA-B fell. QUICKI rose. Kim, Kim, Park and colleagues assigned 25 overweight children aged 9 to 12 to 400 micrograms of chromium chloride or placebo for six weeks on a shared diet-and-aerobic program. HOMA moved -1.84 versus +0.05 (P=0.05). Jain, Kahlon, Morehead and colleagues finished 74 of 100 people with type 2 diabetes on three months of placebo, picolinate, or chromium dinicocysteinate. Dinicocysteinate lowered HOMA versus baseline (P=0.02). Picolinate did not. Versus-placebo HOMA is not in the abstract. Aghdassi, Arendt, Salit and colleagues finished 46 of 52 HIV-positive adults on 400 micrograms of nicotinate or placebo for 16 weeks. HOMA fell from 4.09 to 3.66 (P=0.004). Lucidi 2006 improved glucose tolerance versus placebo in polycystic ovary syndrome and did not change ovulation.

Caveats

Researchers assigned people to a salt or a control, so this is a trial stamp. Form and population split. More papers of the same design do not settle the claim. Jamilian is eight weeks in polycystic ovary syndrome. Kim is 25 children and a shared aerobic class. Jain's picolinate arm missed; the dinicocysteinate win is versus baseline. Aghdassi is HIV. Lucidi is glucose tolerance, not a HOMA increment. This is a journal entry, not medical advice and not a reason to take chromium for insulin resistance.

Effect

qualitative. Jamilian 2016: 200 ug, 8 wk, N=64 PCOS, HOMA -0.8 vs +0.9. Kim 2012: N=25 kids, P=.05. Jain 2013: CDNC vs baseline; picolinate ns. Aghdassi 2010: HIV N=46.
